Can a Rubber Stamp Inspire Viral Kindness?

The Good Money project aims to prove that kindness can be as viral as a YouTube video of a baby laughing. By stamping $1 and $5 bills with text that reads: “This money has been used for good,” Good Virus hopes to inspire people to spend their dollars on a kindness for someone else.

Good Money was devised David Gaz, director and producer of the film “Kindness is Contagious.”

“About a year ago, I was reading a magazine article about James Fowler and his research concerning the viral nature of kindness,” Gaz writes on the Good Virus website. “He demonstrated that if you are kind to one person, they will be kind to four other people, and that each of those four people will be kind to four more people, and so on and so on.”

Money stamps can be purchased for $9.95 or you can perform your first act of viral kindness by sponsoring a stamp to be given away to someone else. For those who choose to write “This money has been used for good” in their own letters, Good Virus only asks that people send in the serial number and their location so they can map and track the project’s influence.

At present, the map shows 8 reports of Good Money use across the United States––from buying a sandwich for a stranger in Kalamazoo, Michigan to a charitable donation in Portland, Oregon, the kindness is already spreading.
