When it comes to kitchens, there’s never such a thing as too much storage. Right? Wrong.

Melissa over at The Inspired Room documented her dramatic kitchen makeover, a project that focused on removing one of the room’s key design elements—upper kitchen cabinets. The existing kitchen was tasteful, yet generic, and in good condition. So why was Melissa so keen to lose her upper cabinets?

A cramped atmosphere and inability to reach the higher shelves of the cabinets were chief among her concerns. But she also found that the renovation forced her to better organize her pantry and to only keep on hand ingredients and tools that she actually needs.

Some prefer to buy move-in-ready homes that require little work, but not this couple. Joel and Heidi Allen purchased a tiny foreclosure with an extensive renovation in mind.

The couple turned this boring 1970s suburban ranch into a beautiful modern home. The renovation included the addition of two carports, a larger entryway and kitchen, and even a second story with lake views. The most amazing part? Joel and Heidi did most of the work themselves. Now that’s impressive.
